Welcome to Muggle Studies

Post  Mildred Hallows on Sun Sep 14, 2008 4:16 pm

Mildred places her bags on the desk in her office, she has a lot of work to do putting up anti magic charms for her room so magic wont work within the classroom. She then sets up a Compaq - Presario Laptop for every student, a ball point pen, and spiral notebook.

Re: Welcome to Muggle Studies

Post  Mildred Hallows on Mon Sep 15, 2008 8:47 pm

Mildred watches as her students pour into the classroom. She lets everyone find their seats and explains that the item in front of them is called a laptop and I will show you exactly how to use it. You will not be able to use magic in this room but you can use muggle items. Todays lesson is going to be an introduction to what items are on your desk.

"First we will get the difficult item out of the way, the laptop. A laptop is what the muggles call a computer that is portable. To open the computer you press this switch on the left, it will pop up slightly and you lift the top part, called the monitor until it is open all the way. Next, you press the silver button on the top to power up the laptop."

"As it loads up I will explain the other items on your desk, and please tell me if your laptop doesnt power up. "

"next to your laptop are two items, a ball point pen and a spiral notebook. Mildred holds them up for the class to see. The pen is used to write as if it were a quill, without having to redip it into the ink. and the notebook is used like parchment, but with lines to keep everything neat and clean."

Mildred waits for questions... (you can roleplay your questions and she will address them)

"Great! Now if everyone is ready I will show you the internet."

Mildred pulls down a white screen and places her laptop on the projector so all the students can see her screen also. "

she shows how to move the curser around with the touchpad and helps them get to google.

"This is called a search engine, you can look up anything I teach in this class on there. for example you can research muggle sweets. place the arrow in this area and touch the touchpad to release it. then type chocolate candy and hit the enter button located by your pinky finger"

If you did it correctly your screen should look like this:

"As your first assignment i want a front and back essay written the computer. You have a little over twenty minutes left to tinker with your computers. Please do not try to search naughty words because I have a porn filter on. "

The best essay will get an email address.

Please Post your essays in this thread until the start of the next class.

Matthew looked puzzled at her last statement; I have a porn filter on....

'What the heck does that mean?' he thought to himself.

He flung his hand wildly into the air, and when he had caught the Professors attention asked: "Pardon me, but what the hell does 'porn' mean?"

[Sowwy, couldn't resist it xD]

Mildred giggles as she realizes her statement would be confusing.

"On the internet there are some places that have material for adults only, a porn filter keeps you from seeing it" she replies "any other questions?"

"Yes, one last question" Matt replies.

"I searched for 'Harry Potter' and clicked on this thing labeled 'images' and something underneath it says 'Moderate SafeSearch is on'. Why is it on?"

"well, that simply means there was explicit images on that search" she answers" you see, after the historical battle at hogwarts, rita skeeter published Hogwarts, the final frontier. that book became so popular that it was evedrywhere and sometime last year a terrible incident with a broom traveler and a tornado sent a copy into the hands of a ms. j. k. rowling. she then rewrote the story for muggles of a young wizard who defeats he who must not be named.

mr. potter's story became so popular that it is a part of everything in the muggle world. they have books, websites, fan rewrites, role playing games, a movie, and sadly explicit materials. um a movie is a story told in moving pictures, not repeated like our pictures but played out. and a role playing game is well a game where people pretend to be something else."

if there are no more questions i expect to see completed assignments soon.

Mildred sees the note and sighs, she cant believe such discrimination still existed in this day and age. She walks the note over to the headmistress' office and leaves it with her gargoyle. When she returns the classroom is filled with students.

"I am very proud of the homework that i received back" She says, "today's lesson will be about a muggle artifact called the coffee pot."

Mildred walks to her cubbard and pulls out a coffee pot. She plugs it in and holds up the carafe.

"This is called the carafe, it is a container that will hold the coffee when it is brewed. I caution you now because this substance will be hot when it comes out of here."

Mildred fills the carafe with water and pours it into the coffee pot.

She then holds up a filter and a can of coffee.

"this is a coffee filter, the coffee pot will suck the water through an internal tube and drip onto the coffee." Mildred opens the can and shows the grains." the filter keeps the grains from going into the carafe."

mildred carefully measures out the coffee and places it in the filter, inside the coffee pot. She pushes the button on the side.

"Now some muggles like the taste straight coffee, but there is a muggle company based out of America called Starbucks that has perfected the flavored coffee. So for today's lesson I have brought different flavors of creamer, but I urge you to try a little of each."

As she is speaking the coffee pot is gurgling and making noises.

Mildred takes out mini paper cups for coffee, the creamers, seperate spoons for each cup, and a sugar bowl. When the coffee is finished she fills each cup. The scent of the coffee fills the classroom, the ghosts of hogwarts float in and out trying to see whats going on.

"I am sure you noticed the color is different than the water. This substance is not a potion nor is it magic, I assure you. Now, if you can all form a line and sip from each of these cups. My homework for you is to write a few paragraphs on the flavor and feeling of coffee... and again be careful it is hot"

The cups go as follows

  1. black
    with sugar
    sugar and cream
    french vanilla
    hazelnut
    mocha
    maple

Re: Welcome to Muggle Studies

Post  Cara Granger on Sun Oct 26, 2008 2:35 am

Cara was a muggle-born so she knew about all these muggle items.

My essay

A computer is a technical object used by Muggles to shop, find out, chat and lots more. Muggles when they made the item were paticularly fascinating. Prices were high, computers were hitting wildly on the muggle world.
Computers in the wizarding world came nowadays but the computer has been a franchise for nearly 30 years in the muggle world.

My new essay

The coffee taste sweet of the sugar and it is sensitively hot with my senses, the deep richness of the coffee is absolutely wonderful.

(Can't write anymore my hands are aching..)

Re: Welcome to Muggle Studies

Post  Caroline Weasley on Mon Oct 27, 2008 1:23 pm

Caroline went up to the cups eagerly. She had always wanted to try coffee but she was always told that she wasn't old enough. All the adult's at her muggle friends' houses would guzzle mugs down all the time and the smell would waft over to her. Oh that heavenly smell! She could smell it now, exciting all the old expectations which built into a crescendo of excitedness. She clutched her first little cup and held it up to her lips. She inhaled it quickly and burnt her mouth, and to top it off it was the most foul tasting beverage she had ever tasted! How could something that smelled so good taste and feel like it came from the devil? She spluttered a bit and hurried back to her desk and took out a piece of parchment. She began scribbling

The Lie of Coffee by Caroline Weasley

I think it is a dirty trick. All the adults get you excited to drink the stuff once you are old enough. It becomes a privilege and a status symbol. You begin longing after it, and you're hooked before you've even taken a sip. The fact that it smells like ambrosia a la manna doesn't help matters. Who ever concocted this stuff has a sick sense of humor, but I must give them kudos for figuring out how to make it smell so good, yet taste so bad. Perhaps it confunds your nose. It is also hot as Hell, from where it must come.

Now I must wonder why adults drink it. Is it all in an effort to ensnare the generation after them, as they were ensnared? Are adults really that bitter? Well, you are what you drink! Or are they unable to stop seeing it as a status symbol, and are afraid to admit that its nasty and they all continue lying and drinking it just to keep up appearances? I am so glad I got to try this before I was "old enough" because children I am sure are honest enough to admit when something is bad, even when it seems to be against popular opinion.

If only muggle children had to take this class, they would be saved from the evils of coffee too. Thank you, Professor Hallows, for opening up my eyes to the lie of coffee and freeing me from its life-long slavery. I know the truth and the truth shall set me free.

Caroline deposited this on the professors desk with a significant look, that was meant to convey humble thanks.
